In the historical formation and development of Binh Dinh, people always mention Cu Lao Xanh Island, also known as Nhon Chau Commune, Quy Nhon City, Binh Dinh Province, located 13 nautical miles from Quy Nhon City.
If you ever set foot on Cu Lao Xanh Island, you will be impressed by the Cu Lao Xanh Lighthouse, built by the French in 1890. It is located on the highest peak of the island, 119 meters above sea level.
The cylindrical tower body is made from thousands of stone slabs arranged in a circle and painted with striking black and white stripes on the outside.
The tower is divided into four main parts, harmoniously connected to each other. The base of the tower is built with bricks and has 32 steps.
Stepping inside the tower, you will admire the spiral staircase with 58 steps, creating a mysterious and beautiful appearance. The top floor is where the rotating light system is located. In the past, the lamp was lit by gas, but today it has been replaced by electric lights.
At night, the lighthouse operates, illuminating a range of 27 nautical miles (nearly 50 km).
The cycle of the light rotation is 12 seconds, with 3 short flashes and 1 long flash, looking like a twinkling star.
After more than 100 years with many ups and downs in history, the lighthouse has always been lit every night, helping ships to navigate safely in the area.
The local people are proud that the lighthouse is a symbol of affirming sovereignty over the islands.
On June 14, 1992, Vietnam Post issued a set of stamps called "Lighthouses" and Cu Lao Xanh Lighthouse was chosen as one of the first four sets of stamps on the theme of Vietnamese lighthouses.
Especially, on November 22, 2014, Cu Lao Xanh Lighthouse was honored to be ranked Top 1 in the Top 5 most famous lighthouses over 100 years old in Vietnam by the Vietnam Book of Records.
